Hobsonville Point Secondary School Communication23 May 2025 PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGEKia ora e ngā whānau, One of our principles is to engage through powerful partnerships. One way we do this is through our Pathways mini career expos. This week, we had the creative and service industries; next week we have the trades industries. These mini expos expose our students to different opportunities and career pathways. Today, you will receive your child's progress report. We send progress reports during the term to ensure parents are informed and can have conversations at home about learning, celebrate success, make any changes required and set new goals. It was great to watch our Junior Football Boys team beat Takapuna Grammar on Saturday. The boys displayed many of our school values and should be proud of their win. GENERAL INFORMATION - REPORTINGThis afternoon, caregivers of Year 9-13 students should receive a Progress Report. These, sent in Week 4 each term, measure performance against Learning Dispositions (Habits and Thinking). They should provide whānau and coaches with early warning information and give students an opportunity for reflection and goal setting. The Learning Objective reports, measuring progress against curriculum levels, are sent on the final day of each term. At HPSS, we believe in the importance of keeping caregivers informed of students’ academic progress. In addition to the Progress Reports, this afternoon caregivers of Year 12 and Year 13 students will also receive a NCEA Summary Report. This summary provides a snapshot of your child’s NCEA Achievement to date, and should include the results for Internal Assessments completed in Term 1. A further updated NCEA Summary will be sent in Week 4 of Term 3, and Week 1 of Term 4. Parents can also track their students’ NCEA achievement through the Schoolbridge app and Parent Portal.

COLLABORATION - PINK SHIRT DAYOn the 16th of May, HPSS celebrated Pink Shirt Day. Throughout the week, the Peer Mediators and hub coaches had been doing activities with the students around the important message of being kind. The Peer Mediators put up positive post-it notes, which were collected from each student and made into a mural in reception. They also held a bake sale and raised $280 for the Pink Shirt Day Foundation. A large portion of the students and staff dressed in pink on Friday, the 16th, to show their support for our anti-bullying campaign, and it was a very festive and fun day. Gabby's hub won the most pink hub competition with their awesome effort. We took a photo of everyone together, and we are proud of the ever-growing support that the students and staff show each year for this event. It speaks to our school kaupapa of manaakitanga, community, and compassion.

PATHWAYS - TRADE EXPO UPDATEThis term in Hub, students have been learning about career pathways. On Monday 19 May, students were invited to attend the Service and Creative Industries mini-Careers Expo during Extended Hub to learn more about training and careers in a variety of service and creative industries. Providers that attended included: Crown Institute of Studies -Business, Hospitality, Tourism, Health & Wellbeing, Techtorium - IT Media Design School - Graphic, Media, Game Design, IT & Software Engineering, Game Design SAE - Audio, Film, Music, Songwriting International Tourism College, NZ School of Tourism Whitecliffe College - Fine Arts, IT, Creative Arts Therapies, Fashion & Sustainability, Design Innovation NZDF - careers in army, navy, airforce; and Luxe Real Estate - real estate & property (and an HPSS internship employer)
We hope that the expo provoked conversations at home about possible career pathways. INQUIRY - EXPLORATION OF RANGIRIRI PAAA Foundation Module went to Rangariri Paa in the Waikato region on Friday. At 9am, we went on a bus ride that was one hour and thirty minutes long. When we were just six minutes from the Paa, our bus broke down, causing us to wait around fifteen minutes for new buses; what an experience!
In the afternoon, we went down to the historic Paa site with Ngaati Naho ancestors carved into tomokanga (carved entrances) and statues, which gave the idea of what happened in Waikato 160 years ago. Later, our tour guide demonstrated how a Puu (musket) was fired. In November 1863, British forces marched to Rangiriri, intending to confiscate the land of Ngaati Naho. The British faced severe resistance during the battle. They retreated many times before capturing the Paa. Overall, there were approximately 200 lives lost in the fight, and 183 Ngaati Naho Maaori were taken in as prisoners.
Bus issues aside, we had a fun day exploring the historic landmarks, with one highlight being the trenches, where we played a game with pool noodles called Ikangohi, meaning "The first to be slayed in battle". COLLABORATION - Y13 OUTDOOR EDUCATIONWhangateau Leadership Camp – He Haerenga Whakamiharo ("An Incredible Journey") Our recent Level 3 Outdoor Education camp to Whangateau was honestly one of the best experiences I’ve had at school. Over three days, we took part in heaps of leadership activities for our NCEA assessment, while exploring the beautiful taiao (natural environment) of Aotearoa. We were lucky to witness a pod of orca in the bay. We snorkelled in the clear waters of Goat Island and saw stingrays and an octopus. At night, we heard the call of a kiwi, which was such a cool experience, but were too noisy to see them! We stayed in tents, cooked our own kai on BBQs, and played night time football under the stars. But the best part was how we worked together as a rōpū (group) taking on leadership wero (challenges), supporting each other, and stepping up when it counted. This camp helped us grow as leaders and made memories we’ll never forget. “Best camp ever” Stanley Johnson III.

INNOVATE - YEAR 12 COMMERCEOver the past two terms, our Commerce class has been working on operating a business which include Māori values and concepts. Currently, the class is working on selling their own group's chosen product by weeks 6 and 8.
Our group is going to be selling handmade clay keychains with culture inspired themes. Our goal is to share little pieces of culture through our product which celebrates diversity and brings people together! We are having a market day on June 1st at Catalina Bay, and at school from weeks 6-8, so come check us out there or on Instagram at @kiiwasians. Special thanks to our teacher, Gabby, for helping and supporting us along the way and teaching us real world knowledge and skills while also making it enjoyable!

STAFF v STUDENT NETBALLSpirits were high and the competitive energy palpable last week as our teachers squared off against a formidable student team in a highly anticipated netball match! The court was abuzz with excitement as spectators gathered to witness this epic battle for bragging rights. Although the student team played hard throughout the match, displaying impressive skill and teamwork, the final score saw the teachers clinch the win, 10-0 much to the delight of the staff and a few good-natured groans from the student support. While the students put up a valiant fight and played exceptionally well, the attitudes of the teachers were summed-up by Tome who claimed “we didn’t even break a sweat - bring on the volleyball competition!” We look forward to seeing the students battle for redemption in the staff v. students volleyball in a couple of weeks.

SPORTING EXCELLENCECongratulations to Nethnilu Abeywickrama for her first-place finish in her age group at the New Zealand Karate League Competition (Round 2). Nethnilu secured two gold medals in the 16/17 intermediate/premier divisions for both kata and kumite events. Nethnilu’s achievement is a testament to her diligent efforts, especially while balancing schoolwork and other extracurricular commitments. We look forward to sharing Nethnilu’s medal success in future tournaments!

INTERNSHIP STORY - MANE HAIR DESIGNI have recently begun an internship through the Pathways team at HPSS. My day at Mane Hair Design includes: washing clients’ hair in the basin, tidying areas/ sweeping the floor, cutting foils and assisting with teas and coffees. Occasionally I help with blowouts and drying hair, along with brushing and helping to apply bleach and colour to hair. The things I enjoy most at Mane are blowouts and applying colour to clients. It’s a great way to get hands-on experience in an environment with kind people. I hope that by the end of my internship I will have helpful and important skills that will contribute to my future career in hairdressing. The ladies at Mane Hair Design are so caring and really make an effort to get to know me, as one of them has been my hairdresser for years. We've formed a great friendship/work relationship. This internship is definitely going to be influential for my future career. My hairdresser, Shar, has recommended many courses and I look forward to exploring them with the Pathways team at HPSS. INNOVATE - YEAR 13 COMMERCEThis year, we have four businesses operating in Year 13 Commerce: KawaCalm, The Culinary Atlas, Aroha Scrubs, and Meadowlight Jewellery. The first three groups went to the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) and delivered their pitches on May 20th. It was an excellent opportunity for them to share their business ideas receive feedback. All of the students went in with confidence and nailed their pitch. We are waiting on the results. Today, Ger from the Re-Creator NZ visited our class. The Re-Creator are a not-for-profit organisation that advice start-up businesses on profitability and sustainability. Ger from the Re-Creator introduced the concept of the circular economy to the class. In Block 1, the students had a chance to talk to Ger and get consultation on their business. In Block 2, as part of learning how to produce ethically and environmentally sustainable products, the students made bath balms and sugar scrubs with either recycled or ethically sourced materials. This experience helped students understand the quadruple bottom line firsthand and will provide inspiration for their own business.
