Hobsonville Point Secondary School Communication31 October 2025 PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGEKia ora e ngā whānau, As we approach the end of another busy and rewarding school year, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our Year 12 and Year 13 students on all their achievements. The past months have been filled with dedication, hard work, and growth, and it was a real pleasure to celebrate these accomplishments together during our recent prizegivings. These occasions truly highlight the talent, resilience, and community spirit that make our senior students such an important part of our school. To our Year 12 and Year 13s, your focus now turns to the upcoming examinations; this is an important milestone that rewards consistent effort and calm preparation. Make sure to balance your studies with rest, maintain a healthy routine, and reach out for support when needed. Your teachers and mentors are here to help you finish the year with confidence. Once exams are behind you, I hope you all take time to relax, recharge, and enjoy a well-earned summer break. Spend time with family and friends, reflect on your achievements, and return refreshed for the challenges and opportunities that await. As our Year 13 students prepare to take their next steps beyond school, we wish them every success on their exciting journeys ahead. A MESSAGE FROM THE NEW SCHOOL BOARDWe are delighted to be serving the HPPS and HPSS school communities as Board members over the next 3 years. Thank you for putting your trust in us. One of our first tasks will be to consider the feedback from the Community Consultation that the previous Board put in place. This will help inform the strategic planning process we are required to undertake – a development that we will keep you informed about over the next six months. We are taking on the Board role at a critical time in education. We are committed to ensuring, within the inevitable constraints of the budget, that we provide our principals and teachers with the resources they need to successfully navigate the changes they are facing, and to continue to provide to our children and young people the excellent education they deserve. PERSONAL EXCELLENCE - WELCOMING OUR 2026 YEAR 13 STUDENT LEADERSAt the Year 13 graduation, we farewelled our outgoing 2025 Student Leaders, celebrating their dedication and leadership throughout the year. Then, on the afternoon of Year 12 prize giving, they returned to hand over the mantle to our 2026 Student Leaders and Community Student Leaders, presenting the korowai in a meaningful ceremony that symbolises the continuity of leadership and the strength of our school communities. Savannah Weavers passed the Manukura korowai to Jolie Papst, the Ama Takiloa leadership transitioned from Lai Salatielu to Jade Dowding with an additional special taonga of Niuean beads, Yolanda Zhou-Wang handed over Academic leadership to Megan Wiggill, Rizq Clarke passed Sports leadership to Daryan Sarkawt, Maia Green handed Arts leadership to Sam Howlett, and Nabira Saeed passed the Cultural Leader korowai to Dhruv Sharma. Community student leaders also received their korowai: Portia Cliffin to Madi McLellan for Onekiritea, Samantha Bunn to Eman Tuazon for Tāhere Tikitiki, Aarav Sharma to Quinn Rachael Woodgate for Tiriwa, and Rylla Rarere to Christine Phung for Waiarohia. Lastly, the handover concluded with Kirsty and Tome presenting our next two kaiārahi/head students with their korowai. Nikita Naidu and Monique Magdadaro will lead this amazing student team in 2026, marking the start of an exciting year of leadership ahead. The Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11 student leaders in each community will be acknowledged at their upcoming prize givings.

PERSONAL EXCELLENCE - YEAR 12 & 13 PRIZE-GIVINGOver the past week, we have gathered as a community to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our Year 12 and Year 13 students. The Year 12 Prizegiving recognised academic success, personal growth, and the development of the Hobsonville Habits and school Values. At the Year 13 Graduation, we farewelled each of our senior students with pride, acknowledging not only their academic success but also their leadership, service, and contribution to school culture. Together, these celebrations reflected the depth of talent, integrity, and manaakitanga within our student body; a true showcase of the extraordinary young people who make Hobsonville Point Secondary School. Special congratulations go to our top award winners. In every prize giving, we acknowledge a student from each of our four communities who consistently demonstrates personal excellence through the Hobsonville Habits. Congratulations to Lily Campbell (Year 12) and Neha Chadha (Year 13) from Onekiritiwa, Natalie Lai (Year 12) and Lai Salatielu (Year 13) from Tiriwa, Ingrid Chang (Year 12) and Yolanda Zhou-Wang (Year 13) from Tāhere Tikitiki, and William Blair (Year 12) and Olivia Oswald (Year 13) from Waiarohia, for their outstanding dedication and positive example to their peers. The Values Awards recognise students who have gone above and beyond in particular areas: Indigo Miles (Year 12) and Levi Tao (Year 13) for Innovation, Freya MacEachern (Year 12) and McKay Leone (Year 13) for Inquiry, Monique Magdadaro (Year 12) and Nabira Saeed (Year 13) for Connectedness, and Dhruv Sharma (Year 12) and Olivia Oswald (Year 13) for Collaboration. Special recognition was given for outstanding achievement in our Excellence Awards: Nikita Naidu (Year 12) and Ata-Marie Williams (Year 13) for Excellence in Culture, Kayla Laubscher (Year 12) and Maia Green (Year 13) for Excellence in the Arts, Emma Lynch (Year 12) and Igor Russanov (Year 13) for Excellence in Sport. Our top awards were presented to Nikita Naidu (Year 12) and Levi Tao (Year 13) who were celebrated for Personal Excellence, while Megan Wiggil won Academic Excellence in Year 12 and in Year 13, McKay Leone was named Proxime Accessit to the Dux. The top academic honours went to George Sfakiotakis, awarded Dux for 2025. Monique Magdadaro (Year 12) and Nabira Saeed (Year 13) were recognised for our highest award, Overall Excellence. These students exemplify the values, capabilities, dispositions and excellence that define learning at HPSS.

YEAR 11 OUTDOOR EDUCATION SURF CAMP - MURIWAIThe adventurous Year 11 Outdoor Education students hit the black sands of Muriwai for a three day Surf Camp full of sun and surf. Across the trip, students took part in three surf lessons with the awesome crew from Muriwai Surf School, who helped everyone improve their skills and confidence in the waves. The surf was wild and relentless for the first two days, really testing everyone’s resilience, but by the third day the conditions eased, giving the group a good final session to put their learning into practice. When they weren’t out in the surf, the group made the most of camp life; cooking up delicious meals, building sand sculptures, and getting competitive in volleyball, capture the flag, imposter, and spotlight. Although some students had sleepless nights thanks to rustling tents and snoring tent buddies, the group stayed positive and energetic. A highlight of the trip came when Kieran scored a free surfboard from the ever so lovely team at Muriwai Surf School (Thanks Martin and Dylan!) a well-deserved souvenir after a few tough sessions in the surf. The camp was a fantastic mix of challenge, teamwork, laughter, and bonding.

SPORTING EXCELLENCE - U19 CLUB FOOTBALL NATIONALSHPSS had five students - Aneesh Gouru, Daryan Sarkawt, Lazlou Vollenhoven, Nina Riquelme and Roarke Quilivan-Potts - represent their respective clubs at U19 Nationals in Napier last week. Nina captained her Northern Rovers team, Daryan represented West Coast Rangers, and Aneesh, Roarke and Lazlou played alongside some other HPSS alumni (Blair and Keegan) for Albany United.

LEARNER LICENCE 2-DAY WORKSHOPChamberDRIVE will be delivering their 2-day Learner License training program at HPSS on Monday & Tuesday 17/18th November (week 7 of term 4). This effective and entertaining workshop prepares students to successfully pass their Learner's test, with the theory content/training delivered on the Monday, and the mobile VTNZ testing van coming to us on the Tuesday. Important info: Dates: Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th November, 9am start both days. Cost: $198 per student, which includes the test fee of $96.10. Payment to be made via KAMAR by 21st November. Registrations: We need a minimum number of students in order for the workshop to go ahead. Registrations are required by Parents/Caregivers via this form.
